Yup. JPEG size isn't dependent on colors but more [directly] on pixel
density.

Just a thought: Sometimes a GIF format will render a smaller file when
a large portion is covered by a single color. This may apply to a scope
trace, or PCB layout. Should be easy to comparatively test.

You really don't have to go to black and white to save on file size. If
you
crop and reduce the size of the image to say 400 X 400 pixels and use
just a
moderate amount of .jpg compression you should be able to have a great
full
color image in about 25 - 30k. A 200 X 200 pixel image would be roughly
10 -
15k file size.
