Ralph is absolutely correct on this point. I guess closed was the wrong word
to use. The list server software requires the list owner to approve all
subscribers and the software rejects postings from non-subscribers. This is
what I meant by closed. Since Ken is the list owner, a note to him is
equivalent to a subscribe request.

It's closed only in that you must ask to join, not in the sense that you
are not wanted on the list.  Closing the list in this way simply
prevents spammers from joining the list easily and causing endless
aggravation to list members.  Please, feel free to join us; we need all
the help we can get!
