Just remembered some LOW power work here in the LA are, probably very
early '70's.  Some guys about 12 miles from me hooked an LM frequency
meter/signal generator to an antenna strung along the top of a fence,
and were copyable here.  They didn't cheat because they didn't know
enough to do it even if they wanted to.   Somewhat later Bob Evans and
Charles Faulkner used something similar to work across a distance of a
few miles.
