Yep, I have one of those plastic garbage cans. I wish I had some Litz wire
lying around here, it would make a better coil.

My earlier post under another title didn't anticipated you asking coil
questions directly. But here's what else I can add:

I'd avoid no. 12 house as it's too large on a small container like a
5-gal one. A more compact coil can be made from no. 14. A 5-gal pale is
about 10.5 in. dia. Mighty small for a full loading coil. Might make all
the L using a smaler wire, but not w/ 14.

Think big. A large trash container is a good former for that heavy
wire. See the RLD web page for what he did with a square shaped "can."
His picture has it all clear to copy, complere w/ variometer.
