Hi Mike (oh, no, another one - Mike that is),
Try
http://www.surplussales.com/Manuals/ManTestEqpt.html
for the operators manual. It worth the money even
though it is a photocopy. It comes in a nice binder
with manual addenda on the first page. I believe the
dBm level your measuring with no input is the
instrument noise floor in its environment which may be
or may not be noisey. The instrument noise floor will
not be the same for every filter selection so it is
difficult to state weather that is typical. I could
not find in my manual the significance of E 3.4 .
Are sure it wasn't CE-3.4 ? CE-N where N signifies
some error code is a calibration error. I get those
on occasion. Calibration error codes are not given in
the op manual but I imagine they are in the service
manual. I do not know where to get a service manual
except maybe eBay. They are not inexpensive. My op
manual states that an E 3.0 is an instrument failure.
At least one of the phase locked loops is unlocked. I
hope this is not your condition.
Happy HP3586B owner,
