John is correct that GIF files are the way to go for black-and-white
drawings. However, I find that when pencil sketches and notes are scanned in
from my notebook, they don't always survive conversion to 2-color (black and
white) very well. In that case a JPG image might provide better resolution
for a given file size. We're talking about quick and dirty here -- John is
also correct that it can be a pain to clean up JPG artifacts in something
meant for publication.
