Hi Mike,
Similar in size to the YB400 but with better filters, tuning range and resolution
is the Sangean 909, also sold as the Radio Shack DX398, normally listing at
+/-$250 but presently on sale at RS for $149.
It has fine tuning (<50Hz steps I think, without looking) on SSB modes even at
LF, which it covers uninterrupted down to 153kHz. It is similar in sensitivity to
the YB400 (measured both) and hears as well on its internal ferrite at LF;
neither are as sensitive on their ferrites as the behemoth Sony 2001 (which
eats 'D' cells at a breath-taking rate) or the 2010. With an external antenna the
DX398 is very lively. (With a 'real' antenna I've heard transatlantics on
topband, and regularly use it as the receive bit of a 'stealth' QRP rig on 30m.)
Using the ferrite, on SSB with headphones, one can read all the 'usual suspect'
NDBs.
Never mind all that, it's a great little shortwave broadcast receiver, AM broadcast
and stereo FM radio, complete with RDS and three timer/alarm clock setups.
Don't leave home without it.
Cheers,
Steve W3EEE
