Loss in the coax is not going to be a problem at these frequencies. Even
RG-58 is acceptable at LF and VLF from the perspective of loss ahead of a
receiver...provided, as John A. indicated, there is some reasonable match
between the antenna and line.

No. It's better from a noise standpoint to maintain the full transmission
line effect by keeping the shield connected at the receiver end. It might
not be a problem immediately, but as different possible interference sources
come and go, keeping a closed system could make a big difference
