4. We discussed the idea of having a field day next year, and I will
pursue getting the pertinent info from the ARRL regarding Field Day
requirements. We'll likely nominate a few hams to the task of creating
a field day exploratory committee at the next meeting. The issue of apathy
on the part of the local ham community was discussed and it is
emphasized that all should be using the repeater on a more frequent
basis. The new unofficial local simplex channel is 147.540 MHz
for those wishing to casually chat in the area without tying up the
busy repeater.
6. The issues surrounding the need to remain
professional on local frequencies was discussed with a reminder that
it's both illegal and unethical for ham frequencies to be used by
amateurs to discuss emergency calls that are heard over the
scanner. There are many non-hams (Tony interjected that MANY law
enforcement personnel are included) that monitor local ham frequencies
and how we conduct
ourselves on the air reflects ham radio in general.
7. I
will be teaming up with Tony to make a presentation to the county board in
the near future. The presentation will focus on the role of ham radio
in this area and request some funding, if available, to help repair the
.06 repeater antenna that is bent at the least and may need other
repairs at worst. Rest assured that the cost to have a tower crew just
climb the tower will likely exceed the cost of a moderate grade HF rig.

President
