As of 0600 hrs this morning 2/8/2003 the FDNY removed all VHF
portable radio's from apparatus
and placed in service the NEW UHF Motorola XTS 3500R portable handie
talkie radio. There was
plenty of activity today as companies around the city tested/played
with the new units. Also note
that each FF now is equipped with a portable radio. Battalion chiefs
and aides along with SOC
companies will have the capability of also being able to monitor on
Model three radios viewable on
there LCD screen which unit, company member is in trouble or giving a
MAYDAY when the orange
emergency button is depressed. Each of the radios is assigned to a
position. Example: Engine
999-01 would be the officer's radio, then the ECC/MPO 599902, then
the nozzle 599903, back up
599904, door 599905, control 599906. Engine companies that ride with
4 members as opposed to
five were not issued the additional radio at this time.
