SM Sharon Harlan--N9SH On November 19 the Rock River Radio Club in Dixon
celebrated their 50th anniversary with a buffet dinner. There were
approximately 50 people attending this event. Central Division Director =
Dick
Isley, W9GIG, was the guest speaker. The fourth annual SKYWARN =
Recognition
Day will take place this year on December 7 from 0000 to 2400 UTC. This =
is
the day that amateur radio operators visit National Weather Service =
offices
and contact other operators around the world. This event is sponsored =
by ARRL
and the National Weather Service. Former Illinois resident Clay Dewitt,
N9HUB, became a silent key on October 21, 2002, in a nursing home in =
Virginia.
ARES operators from the Jacksonville Amateur Radio Society provided
surveillance and communications for safety of runners in the 62.2 mile
Illinois Valley Relay in Scott and Green Counties. ARES worked closely =
with
the deputy coroner of Morgan County, a leader in operation of this race. =
The
corner of Morgan County assisted with runner safety. Both coroners had =
their
emergency vehicles and assisted at dangerous intersections, with =
assistance of
local law enforcement. ARES had cellular and direct contact with =
emergency
services in IREACH. The runners expressed appreciation for amateur =
operators
patrolling the route. Morgan ARES has two new members with law =
enforcement
backgrounds. KB9ZBS, Jacksonville PD, Ret, and KB2TBR, former police LT =
in NY
state. The current ARES deployment strength in Morgan County is 10. =
W9OES
had been introducing WMD and Hazmat concepts at JARS meetings which are
attended be active ARES members. Congratulations to the North Shore =
Radio
Club, the Fox River Radio League, and the Schaumburg ARC on being =
renewed as
Special Service Clubs. The Head of the Rock Regatta, a 3.75 mile race =
on the
Rock River was held Sunday, October 13th with over 400 boats in 40 =
races.=20
There were over 1700 participants with more than 3000 visitors. Radio
operators coordinated launching and tracking boats, assisted race =
officials
with starting and finishing times and conflict resolution and =
coordinated
safety and rescue operations for swamped and overturned vessels. Those
participating with communications were : N9JBA, KB9YRW, KB9SKW, N9MCS, =
WA9AXG,
KC9ATR, KB8QDA, N1VEN, WA9DIM, KA9IMX. The same day 250 walkers =
completed a 5
mile CROP Hungar Walk to raise money for local area food pantries and =
mission
churches. Radio operators coordinated the event and assisted event =
officials
with inventories at rest stops, tracking the walkers and coordinating =
pick-up
wagons. Those radio operators taking part were: N9CCE, WA9AXG, KB9SKW, =
N9OTC,
N9CNW, and KA9IMX. Don't forget to check into the IL Section ARES net =
on
3.905 MHz at 1630 local time on the first and third Sundays. Pierre =
Berube,
KC9BRF, was selected as the McHenry County Wireless Association's Ham of =
the
