Sigh.. It is with a heavy heart that I write this note.. Thanks Don for your
"congrats", however, I am afraid that things didn't go quite as they seemed.

True, Monica did pass the Extra exam.. GREAT!! and for about an hour and a
half, so did I.. I was told that I had missed 8 questions while the examiner
was filling out the certificate. I look around the hamfest for a bit, visit
with Jay and Monica and then leave to run some errands. About 1 1/2 hours
after the test I get a call on my cell phone from the Sheriff's Office
telling me to call Dick at the hamfest, that I "had left something there"..
Hmmm had everything that I came with, I wonder what he is talking about. So,
call Dick.. Dick asks if I am still in Springfield, Yes.. Well it seems that
we only scored your test to question 35 and, after ALL 3 OF THE PROCTORS
LOOKED AT THE DAMN ANSWER SHEET they find that they had failed to check the
final 15 questions. After checking these questions my "NEW" score was 14
missed and 13 is required to pass.

They offered to let me take the test again, which I did. To be honest I was
so stunned that I could not tell you what was on the paper and failed the
test by far more than I had ever failed it in practice when I first started
to study.

Needless to say I was disappointed. I am also embarrassed. I had called my
wife, called Bill, KB9AKD, and of course talked with Jay and Monica. Hey,
Monica and I had worked hard for this, as you all know, having taken similar
tests. I know that I felt great, and assume that Monica did as well and also
had a great sense of relief.. Now my bubble is burst big time..

Will I take it again?? I dunno. Right now I am big time pissed. I can not
believe that 3 VE's with, by their statement, having 15 years of experience
at VE testing, allowed this to happen. I would have not felt as bad, not
said a word if they had "found' this at the time of grading the paper. I
find it interesting that red pencil was used at the time of the original
grading and the "new" missed questions were checked off in another color.

Yep, I am venting.. Sorry for that. I wanted everyone to know the "rest of
the story".. Again, Congrats to Monica. Enjoy your new license. If I
offended anyone with my "salty" language, you should have heard me in the
truck on the way home when I talked to my wife and 'AKD, sorry.

I remain as I was...
