Tonight (December 7), the Moon's orbit will carry it in front of Mars, creating a planetary disappearing act that could last up to an hour depending on your location. As seen from Los Angeles, Mars will disappear at 6:30 p.m. and reappear at 7:30 p.m. PST.

Weather permitting, the event should be visible over much of North America. Although Mars is rather bright, the close encounter may be somewhat difficult to see with the naked eye due to the brilliance of the full Moon.

To view the event, find a location with an unobstructed eastern horizon. Although the disappearing act should be visible to the unaided eye, you will probably get a better view through binoculars or a telescope.
