WEDNESDAY VANDENBERG LAUNCH
by Brian Webb
A Delta IV Heavy booster carrying a classified U.S. National
Reconnaissance Office payload is scheduled for launch from Vandenberg
AFB Wednesday morning. The Delta is set to lift off from south base
at 10:52 PDT, a time that probably coincides with the start of the
undisclosed launch window.
Following liftoff, the rocket will rise vertically for several
seconds, begin to slowly pitch over, and probably head southward.
Despite the rocket's size and power, the Delta will likely provide a
subdued display. Weather permitting, naked-eye observers as far away
as 20 miles may be able to see the rocket's shape. The rocket's first-
stage flame may be faintly visible as far away as 50 miles.
The Delta will probably produce a brief contrail as it passes through
altitudes between about 33,000 to 38,000 feet above sea level. The
contrail could be visible to the unaided eye for distances of more
than 100 miles.
Under the right conditions, the launch may be audible up to 20 miles
away.
