[Laser] current limit

Odd question
 
looking at the high powered LEDs which run from 2.5 to 3.9 volts
they indicate the need for a driver device
what kind of trouble would I get into seriesing 4 ,,3 volt H P LEDs
and just run them off 12 volts
would I need a series resister or What can they run away let the smoke
out  ??
 
the Chinese have some real bargains
