Here are some ideas on processing multiple large wave files
and sound card noise etc..
I've noticed the sound card on my new computer seems to
have a lot more noise than my old one did. There are many
lines present throughout the audio spectrum although they
are all fairly low level -70db or more below the reference
point of one program (Argo).
I found out, though, if you mute the un-needed audio
sections - everything except master volume and wav, nearly
all the lines go away.. and i have a nice smooth noise
floor of -120db or so. This may just be an oddity with my
machine but i thought it might apply to others as well.
So, if you have the .wav file you want to examine copied
onto your hardrive, you don't need any external inputs and
you can mute everything and take advantage of the lower
noise levels.

Another thing that might come in handy if you have lots of
separate files or if a file wont load in your favorite
analyzer, is to load them all up in a desktop media player
(Winamp or other mp3/wav player you have installed) turn
off any EQ that you might have set on the player and setup
your screen capture options and frequency band in your DSP
program as usual. Then start your DSP program and the
player. The files will play one by one in order till the
end. - go on vacation till the files have been processed.

I found that this works on argo, spectran and spectrum lab
without having to select an input option first. By default
the programs will listen to anything played on the system
and process it as if it were loaded normally or through a
line input to the sound card etc.. The media player volume
control will act as an input level for the DSP program, so
you can use it to control the gain. I guess the DSP program
is getting the audio data before it goes to the sound card
thus bypassing most internally generated noise sources.

I have been listening + looking at that 60 second - 13 meg
.wav file posted by Mike Coutore (via Terry Morris' post)
on his website but i'll save my comments for a later post.
I posted some spectrum images i made from it with Argo
