Yves, that was very good information, my interest is in high speed data
more than low speed low signal levels but each bit adds up. I had not
seen your web page, very interesting information.

I am working on high speed data links between metro area amateur radio
packet switches, I keep on thinking that in our area (Florida) the disaster is
usually a hurricane, after the storm goes by and the recovery starts the
weather is usually quite dry (storm pulls humidity into it and leaves atmosphere
dry as it moves away) so we would have very good conditions for optical
data links if the structures are still left standing. And since in this country
most utilities are still in the air, many wires and cables will be down so
a FSO link even with interruptions from birds and other things is better
than nothing. and WiFi can be used to link the users to the network.

So the more information I can gather the better I can attempt to build
somthing, it must be low cost as hams are famously cheap, but it does
need to work reliably as long as the path is there.

"the only dumb question is the one you DID NOT ask resulting in my going
out and having to identify your bits and pieces in the midst of torn
and twisted metal."
