I read :
MAA (Mock ANDE Active spacecraft) also carries six onboard laser diode  
beacons (810 nm) that will be commanded on during passes over AMOS, which will  
observe the light from the diodes to deduce the MAA spin rate and  orientation.
It seems the laser is only actived when the satellite is above the   Air 
Force Maui Optical and Supercomputing facility (AMOS) ???
