With the wide angle of those LED's you could add a few
more and make it a fully 180 or 360 emitter to serve
the whole area. And for some sort of active repeater
experiment, maybe have a similar arangement of photo
diodes with no lenses or minimal beam shaping for
certain direction(s) with a wide field of view.
