Kerry,
I was going to suggest some sort of cylinder lens or
mirror too. One thought i had was the lens from a
laser diode module - that they use to correct the
oblong beam, oriented vertically. They're kind of
small and short focal length though and the detector
or emitter would be almost in contact with it if used
a little inside the normal focus.
