This has been a very interesting thread. Thanks guys!

Please include me in for a copy of the article if it does not get posted on
the web.

I am curious what the scan range of the micrometer systems are typically. I
think Kerry said that he is using a 12" bar hinged. Is that with a micrometer
with a 1" range? ( That would be 83.3 mR adjustment.) Do you typically use
as much as 50mR on a setup?

I am working on a rather bulky tripod and table that I was going to use a
6-32 threaded "shaft" with a horizontal arm of 31.25 inches in the design. That
would give 1/32nd inch movement per revolution of the shaft and a 1.0 mR angle
change. At first I thought of about 120 mR ( 60 mR either side of center).
Does that seem like too much?

Have not worked out the vertical adjustments, but they will probably be 1/2
to 1/5th the rate due to mechanical advantage. For a manual system, I may try
to use a flexible link to the adjusment dial.

Best wishes.
