I'm not sure that PWM by itself will qualify you for a "non traditional=
mode".
When I queried the ARRL contest division a year or so ago they replied that
it could only be a mode of contact that didn't fit under the "normal"
categories (phone, CW or Digital). SSTV over the LASER would be cool and
count though!

If you are sending Morse Code it would be classified as CW. PSK31 or RTTY
would work well as digital modes. Even standard AX.25 Packet could be done!
