[Laser] And furthermore

Happy New Year to all. May you have health and prosperity.... and lots of
fun with the laser projects.

Yesterday I got back from a 9 day trip with my wife, two grandkids, and their
parents to visit family and Disney World. Checked my email for these posts
(SPAM filter seems to be working, there were more laser messages than junk.)
and thought that I would add some experience.

In August I bought several laser pointers from the Electronic Goldmine, part
number G13804. They cost $1.49 each or $5 for four and look similar to the
ones used on my Ramsy units. After I receive them I compared one to the LBC6 and
it provided similar color and brightness. I have not checked for electronic
similarity, but the lens holder in front of the diode is yellow plastic with
tiny gearlike ridges arround the perimeter for finger adjustment rather than
the brass with large screw driver slot on the Ramsey LBC6's pointer. I am sure
that the cheaper unit uses a molded plasitc lens, and the LBC6 might use a
glass lens. I think the G13804 will provide similar performance for my tinkering.

Since I got enough to play with, I decided to dis-assemble one. I used a
tubing cutter about half an inch forward of the hole for the switch button. It
is still long enough to push the diode and circuit board back into the tube for
mounting, but now I can access the solder points. The circuit board inside
had a switch and a surface mount 68 ohm resistor. Since there does not seem to
be any of power control and protection circuitry, these may be better for
modulation with external circuits. I intend to solder wires arround the switch,
which should be easier on the switch pin than on the surface mount pads.

I don't have a personal website, but if someone would like pictures of my
stuff, I now have access to a digital camera. I did a fair job of mounting my
LBC6s in 2 inch plastic pipe
