If it's the Burr Brown OPT210, then it is a good choice for a front end.  My 
opt210 can detect a laser signal that you can't see and has given good 5 x 7 
speech and 599 CW over 76km.

There are data sheets available.  There is also circuit for a receiver on my 
web site. If you decide to build that, drop me a line as we've managed to 
extract another 6dB+ of sensitivity since that circuit was drawn

For later CD recorders or DVDs you'll also have a nice high power laser 
diode. However your early version is probably a couple of mW of I.R.
