Subject: [Laser] Cloud bounce - getting there!
Hi - just thought I'd share my small success.
At long last I have achieved a IR Cloud bounce image , I was beginning to
think it was not possible with 5mw, but there it was not very big and not
very bright BUT it was there. equipment lash up was a 5mw IR CD player laser
diode and 1inch collimator.modulated at 800 hz with on off keying via pic
chip .The image was viewed on B/W monitor and captured using 0.1 lux CCD B/W
camera. This being fitted with a 135 mm telephoto. The combination was aligned
at a local house chimney stack to ensure they were coincident then I rotated
the two until they pointed straight up and there faintly shimmering and
going on and off was the Laser signal.I then adjusted the elevation down in
10 deg steps the image got progressively dimmer and was not visible at 30deg
elevation.
Well this has spurned me on and today I fitted the CCD camera with an old
commercial TV f2.8 4inch dia. telephoto, this I hope will brighten the
image. Next step is to get several independent lasers aligned to coincide to
a similar area in the sky, theory being the larger the area covered with the
signal the easier it will be to find when I start actual communication with
friend 13km away behind a hill!
Hope this encourages others to keep trying....
