Hi fellow laserists, just one of my periodic "heads-up" posts when I find a
good deal somewhere that I feel would benefit us all. As always, I have no
affiliation whatsoever with the company mentioned herein, I am just a
satisfied customer.
This time it's 6-5/8" diam. concave makeup mirrors from American Science and
Surplus (www.sciplus.com) cat. no. 34335, $3.50 for a pack of 2. The focal
length based on a quickie check (not very scientific :-) appears to be about
20". Perfect for making a 'scope for use as an optical antenna when you
don't want to risk your expensive astro job, and no more 'borrowing' the
YL/XYL's mirror for 'experiments'! Image formation is quite decent, but of
course we are not concerned with this for communications purposes. No doubt
it would still have too much distortion for astro use, but for 'lasering'
it's more than adequate.
Mount one of these puppies in a black ABS pipe, pop a large-area PD like the
All Elec. ones in front (or make a diagonal and shoot from the side) feeding
a K3PGP frontend and you're good to go...
