[Laser] VCSELS for data link - simple but more expensive ?

Hello all,

Can anybody share his experience regarding VCSEL's ?
I was thinking to buy couple of them for my experimental IR data link.

I could use red laser pointers for them (they cost only  $1,5 here hihi) 
but visible and expanded beam comming from couple hundred meters could 
scare my neighbours and I decided to go invisible - IR ;-) Besides as 
far as I know VCSELs don't require quite complicated drivers (I need 
modulate them).  But I guess they cost more than usual laser diodes. 
Anybody knows where one could buy them at affordable price ? I found
