Also, for these types of devices to be considered IrDA compliant, the
specification ( http://www.irda.org/standards/standards.asp ) calls for
between 30cm and about 2 meters of communication distance. Power consumption
is really a big objective with these devices. One or more lenses may allow
the device to remain IrDA compliant - taking into account that there is an
emitter and a separate receiver behind the deep red lens on the device,
though they are pretty close together. . . .
