Hi Jim,
The reason for the range of Palm Pilot being a meter or so, is that the IR
beam has quite a wide beamwidth, thus spreading the IR power over a large
area. (This is done to alllow easy alignment of two devices.)
You can't use a laser pointer with the Palm since the wavelength of the
Palm's IR operates at about 850nm, the laser pointers operate at about 633nm
or 670nm.
You can, however, extend the range of the Palm by using one or two lenses.
