Hi Ron

Have you computed the effect of temperature and density variations on the
laser valocity and its ultimate effect on laser video transmission. If that
is not serious than only you need is a fast laser modulator. For pulsed
lasers of several watts of power a short pulse of say 10ns with high repeat
rate of say 10-20 MHz may regenerate the waveform using a peak sample and
hold type arrangement but not a simple peak detector or sample and hold.

I have not done this but just an idea this one is.

I will like to make simple beacon to transmit environmental data over 20km
distance using a modulated light source for my radiation sensors in day
light. Let us see if helogen bulb will do the trick. I may use a sensitive
photo-detector to catch the signal. A 1000W helogen lamp is the stuff in my
mind with a good reflector for light focus.
