Hi Bob. I am very fond of the HE-80 radios since this was my first 'real' receiver I purchased as a youth. I guess it just seemed so much more advanced than the Halli S-120 I also purchased new as a youngster. I now have 4 HE-80s. I also have 2 HA-225s.
Although both were made by Trio, I can't explain the HE versus HA nomenclature.
The difference between the HE-80 and HA-225 is the coverage, of course. The HA-225 covers .15 - .40 MHz where the HE-80 covers the BC band. Both cover 6 Meters.
I lack only the HE-10 for my collection, but the price is WAY out of line, in my opinion. ha ha
Back when I was a teen, I had the HE-80 and my neighbor had the KT-200 which is a kit HE-10. The radio is pretty simple and the tuning coils, etc came as a pre assembled sub-assembly. The HE-30 is basically the same as the HE-10, just a different chassis layout. It's kit version is the KT-320.
I've reviewed most of these radios on eHam....-
Don't forget the Allied A2515 (solid state) and SX-190 (made by GRE).....
Which ever radio you decide on, you will need to replace ALL the paper caps under the chassis (tube models). The PS cap(s), might still be OK, but I have never found a single paper cap (bypass / coupling) in these radios, from this time frame that wasn't horribly leaky. Sometimes you will find one of these radios cheap because the .005 uf caps across the AC line at the transformer have exploded. Most of the radios I have seen, one or both of these caps are in pieces......

I'm looking to add a tube-type Lafayette receiver to my group of SWL radios. What would be your suggestion for a "band cruiser" set? I've been looking at the HA/HE series including the '225, '80, '30, etc.
BTW - Can someone tell me the main differences between the HA and HE series of sets?
Thanks and 73 to all,
Bob
