Speaking of receiver pre-amps:
Mini Circuit Labs (USA) makes a very nice line of monoblock rf pre-amps.
It's the MAR line. Such as MAR 4, MAR 6 etc. It's a small block of plastic
with four solderable pins. The surface mount version is tiny but doable
with a 30 watt iron. It's one pin on four sides of the compass so it's hard
to &$%^ up the solder job.
They can provide up to 20 db of gain and have NF's of 2 - 3 db. Some models
are good to 2 ghz.
No tuned circuits required just an input and output cap. DC bypass choke
and decoupling cap. Runs on up to 12 vdc. Add a pot in the supply circuit
to control gain and noise. 12 vdc can be obtained from the 12 v filament
line, a diode and electrolytic cap of at least 100 uf/ 25 vdc.
I built one of these and put in a Drake TR-4. Wow! Very hot. what a
difference these little buggers makes. This thing will probably shoot an
old Lafayette into orbit. I just bought 5 MAR 6SM's on ebay . A really good
addition to the boatanchor receiver.
