Ken and all,
You know, it might have been a Valiant and the adapter.
I made a few trips to the Jamaica store before they opened Syosset. Still
have a pair of HE-29 walkie talkies bought there. My first "real" receiver
was a
HE-30 fed by an Ameco CN-144 for 2mtr AM.
Fun days for sure.

Harold NY7Y

I had my Dad drive the 40 miles to the Natick, Mass store. I gave up my
after school work $ for a brand new HE-80 and matching speaker. Since the
previous radio was a Halli S-120, I thought I was in hog heaven!
I regretted selling it to a chap that lost it in a house fire. No big deal,
as they are plentiful on ePay, er, eBay, and for cheap.
I bought 2 HE-80s and a HA-225. I was able to come up with a paint that's an
exact match for the Trio color. Also bought 3 (!!!) HE-73 Precons. A recap,
and realignment was given to all of 'em and they work great (for what they
are).
I made many enjoyable Novice contacts with the HE-80 and my Knight Kit
Xmitter.
Also, before SSB became the dominant mode on 6 Meters, I bought a HA-460, AM
transceiver.
I lived in Mass then and had a blast hilltopping from my auto on the various
mountaintops. I used a 3 element 'hilltopper' made by Henry, W1NEV of Hi Par
Antennas back in my hometown of Fitchburg, Mass. I still have 2 of them and
the design is great. Takes about 30 seconds to unfold it and get on the air.
No tools needed. I eventually used the pair stacked and with the 10 W output
could work from Cental Mass down into Ny, NJ, and PA. What fun to be on the
receiving end of a pileup for hours.....
