To all KY Amateurs and Newsletter Editors,
As you know, the mission of the Kentucky Amateur Radio Web Site (KYHAM) is
to provide meaningful information resources to Kentucky amateur radio
operators, emergency agencies, and general public about amateur radio in
the Commonwealth.
Running a consistently updated web site requires resources. There are two
resources that KYHAM counts on.
The most important resource is information. This has been the reason for
the success of the site. Many times I have admitted that my role is one of
an editor. Kentucky covers an area of a little over 40,000 square miles,
and goodness knows one person can't cover that without help. To all of the
clubs, organizations, emergency coordinators; thank you! I couldn't do it
without your news and updates. Please keep supporting us in this fashion.
Now for the news about the subject line of this email. :)
Each year, it costs about $400-500 for site hosting, and software and
hardware costs to run the web site. As administrator of the site, and as
the person hosting it's resources, Tyler Allison, KI4BUM and I accept the
costs as it is a labor of love. As the initiator of the KYHAM concept, I
do not want to put us in the position that we rely on Tyler's generosity to
take money out of his pocket to support us. I would rather establish a
small fund that we as Kentucky amateurs can draw from to ensure that costs
are covered and that we will always have a home.
When I first put up the "support KYHAM page" I expected a trickle of
donations here and there, but nothing like what has happened in the past
month. A generous user of the site has donated radio for me to give away
to one sponsor as a way to reward them for helping KYHAM to cover it's
costs. Deciding on the best way to do it, I am not going to hold a
contest, raffle, etc. This is going to be a donation back to you. Those
who help support the site will be placed on a list, and one person will be
picked at random to receive the radio. I want this to be a way to say
thank you for helping me support the information that we have grown to
depend on.
For those who would like to donate a few dollars to help support the ISP
and hosting costs of KYHAM, I invite you too. Maybe you will be the one to
receive a new Kenwood TM-G707A Dual-Bander with a DFK4C 13ft Mounting Kit.
I would invite the individual or organization that makes an donation and
is awarded the radio to donate it to an emergency communications location
such as an EOC, Red Cross, or to a ham that needs a radio, but can't afford
one. Anywhere that it will serve the greater good and fellowship of
amateur radio.
Plans have been made to take some of the donations from this radio and put
it towards another radio to give away for next year's costs.
Since KYHAM doesn't have to support a budget of tens of thousands of
dollars a year, you will never see a "we need money to continue" post. The
sole reason for wanting to give away this radio is to thank you
collectively, and to pay for the generosity of the ham who is hosting the
site. Have you priced web, DNS, and application hosting lately? We are
getting one heck of a deal. I would like to keep it that way so that we
don't have to find another home for our information.
Full details on the radio, and the giveaway can be found at
http://www.kyham.net/support.html.
Please post this in your newsletters, and feel free to pass it around the
ham community. Full details of when the radio is given away in the coming
months, and hopefully a photo of the winner will be posted on the page as
well.
Take care, 73,
Pat, KD4PWL
