COMMENTS:

May of 2004 will go in the record books as one of the stormiest months in
years. 46 reported activations for SkyWarn operations and I have no doubt
that there were more yet unreported! Following the last storms in the
early morning hours of May 31, 2004 we now have 36 of Kentucky’s 120
counties declared under local states of emergency. Amateur radio has
been active in providing service to their local EMA’s as well as other
volunteer service organizations. As I turned out a lengthy report last
week on the activations and status of operations across the state as well
as two addendums for other reports received I will not revisit those.
Instead I will add the following as yet a third addendum to that report.

Scott County ARES supported Scott County EMA with a SkyWarn net on May 27
and May 30th.

Assisting West Va. amateurs with their flood response are Ky. amateurs of
District 9 working at the Paintsville Community Center to assist in
handling of emergencies messages. Ralph Tuley KB9ORD pulled his
communications van in and John Hager N4KJU (E.C. for Johnson County) and
Ed Caudill KB4SQI (D.E.C. for district 9) and many others worked for 3
days in the effort.

Aside from their already reported activity, Fayette County ARES also
activated TWICE on May 30th as yet more severe storms threatened the
Lexington area. Two more funnel clouds were sighted during the first net
that day.

The state EOC has been active on HF as well as many VHF and UHF nets this
month with KF4FMZ, K4MIS, WA4CMO, KB5WCH and KG4RRI who have all sat in
the hot seat at the state EOC’s station KY4EOC.

Special thanks to all of you out there who served in whatever capacity
during what will surely be a long remembered series of storms.

OTHER OPERATIONS IN MAY:
Weather siren tests in McCracken County were conducted throughout the
month with amateurs assisting their local EMA. EC KC6GNV reports that
local EMA Director Kent King is now a licensed amateur with call sign,
KI4FUR. WELCOME ABOARD KENT!

3rd District DEC, W4RCX reported that Schley Cox W4AMC participated in a
disaster drill with the Big Rivers Chapter of the American Red Cross in
Owensboro on May 5, 2004. The scenario was one in which a mobile home park
in eastern Daviess County was hit by a tornado with 50 mobile homes either
destroyed or damaged with injuries to a large number of residents.

Scott County ARES also provided communications for the Horsey Hundred Bike
Ride on May 29-30. The amateurs assisted by traveling the route looking
for injured or those too tired to complete the course. NCS was established
in the Scott County EMA Command Post at Georgetown College.

Hopefully June will not be so dramatic!
