Maybe the focus should not be on the ARRL, but rather on the "rules" for

Joe:
So what does "making them compatible with today's technology" mean? Today's
technology is far more complex than it was 50 years ago! Does this mean that
hams should understand the workings of a DSP based radio as well as they
understood the workings of a regenerative receiver of 1932? I opened up the
schematic to my 756ProII yesterday it covered an 8ft table top and that was
just one side of the paper!
No. Somehow I think what you mean by "compatible" is "SIMPLE". Maybe as
simple as pressing the button on the side of a walkie-talkie.
Or maybe it means ANYTHING but Morse Code? Or maybe it means "make the rules
easy enough so no knowledge of anything is needed?Am I on the right track
here?
Yes, if we make the ham test "compatible" with today's technology, every ham
would need an understanding of Fast Furrier Transformation, Central
Processing Units, Digital Storage Techniques, a dozen different data
protocols such as PSK31, Pactor etc. and don't forget satellite technology!
Actually I don't think we realize how little we do need to know to be hams
these days. We no longer need to know how our radio works. Can it be dumbed
down any further?
