Clear DayIt is with great respect and admiration that I as Kentucky =
Section Manager accept the resignation of Steve McCallum, W2ZBY, as =
Public Information Coordinator. I hope you will join me in thanking =
Steve for his many years of service not only to the hobby but to the =
ARRL. The following was sent to me by Steve and I want to share it with =
the Section.=20
=20
I am getting old (90 now!) and I want to spend more time writing fiction =
and playing with my new FT 817 QRP rig. A life member of ARRL, I have =
served Amateur Radio faithfully for more than half a century.
=20
My first "rig" was an oatmeal box BC receiver in the 1920s. A kid my age =
was a ham and I got interested and learned Morse. But I moved away =
before getting further in the hobby. Emerging from high school at the =
start of the Great Depression (1929) I soon became more absorbed in how =
to make a living than ham radio. It wasn't until years later I truly =
learned CW in the USCG, and as operator on an Army ship in Pacific =
Theatre in WWII.
=20
Back in civilian life as a newspaperman, I got my first ham ticket?Class =
B, CW only; upgraded to Class A year later--in New York City in 1948. =
Immediately joined the ARRL, became one ofNew Jersey's first 21 county =
ECs at the birth of RACES. I've belonged to the Northern NJ ARA, the =
Schenectady, NY ARA, The Owensboro KY ARC, the Key West FL ARC, and now =
the Bluegrass ARS in Lexington. I worked successfully with other hams to =
get auto license plates in NJ,NY, and KY. I've also been instrumental in =
getting three state governors to issue proclamations for ham radio in =
NJ, NY and KY (in 1959 when I was KY SEC)
=20
In 15 years working in the then GE Tube Department and in GE's =
Electronic Components Division, I administered the former GE Edison =
Radio Amateur Award for public service during it's 10-yr run. The Edison =
Award culminated in a prestigious dinner ceremony in Washington DC, =
replete with congressmen, FCC officials and leading ARRL directors and =
staffers as guests of GE. Also for several years I was editor of the =
bi-monthly GE HAM NEWS, which recorded many technical "firsts" by ham =
radio scientists
at GE--including the famous "SSB Jr." which sounded the death knell of =
ham amplitude modulation in the 1950s. This GE HAM NEWS circuit was =
purchased by Central Electronics who produced their noted Model 10A--a =
10 w PEP tube transmitter that ran circles around the "Texas AM =
Kilowatts."
=20
I held K4URX during my first KY sojourn (15 yrs in Owensboro) and 14 =
years in Key West--and got my original call back a few years ago.=20
