I love Ham Radio! And it's been an honor and privilege to serve as =
your Great Lakes Division Vice Director and currently as Director! I =
seek to continue to work on your behalf in making sure the ARRL provides =
quality, vital member services.

    First licensed in 1973 as WN4FAT, I'm now KI4LA. I'm from a ham =
family with Dad (SK '99), WA4KUB, daughter KB4LEW, and son-in-law =
KG4JMI. Professionally, I am a University Professor at NKU and a =
computer consultant.

My service has been primarily in the public service arena, starting =
as an EC then DEC, then as an Assistant Director to 4 Directors, then =
Vice Director. With this background, President Haynie appointed me to =
serve on both the Board's Public Relations, and Volunteer Resources =
Committees.

My interests include keeping the airwaves clean and protected, =
regulations enforced, and spectrum properly managed. I will work =
actively to find ways of keeping our hobby alive against the threats of =
cellular radio, unlicensed RF devices, and SW broadcasters. Nothing can =
substitute for the joy of one ham radio contact.

I have provided communications support in several disasters over the =
years, including tornados, floods, searching for lost children, =
hurricane Marilyn in the Virgin Islands, and with the FBI and NDMS =
during the 1996 Atlanta Olympic bombing =
<http://www.nku.edu/~johnston/atlanta.html>.

I enjoy working DX and have held reciprocal licenses from Austria to =
Australia and many countries in between.

I was voted NKARC Ham of the Year in 1997 for my efforts in helping =
the club to secure a $125,000 grant and repeater site on an AT&T =
cellular tower.

For more information see my home page at =
<http://www.nku.edu/~music/johnston.htmlx>.

Thanks to all who supported my candidacy for Vice Director and, =
since July 2002, Director. I will do my very best to meet your =
expectations. Please feel free to email me with your ideas and concerns =
about the future of amateur radio. [email protected]=20

    On-the-air decorum ...
"Please do this for me. The next time you speak on the air, imagine =
that you are addressing a room of fathers/mothers and grand =
fathers/mothers, each standing and holding the hands of their 6 year old =
sons/daughters grandsons/granddaughters. Your perspective might change."
-- Great Lakes Director Gary Johnston, KI4LA
