Abbreviated Relief Emergency & Routine Messages

These past few weeks we have looked at ARRL RADIOGRAMS, how
they are laid out and how to count text wordgroups
to define the check of the message for the PREAMBLE.
Last week we even demonstrated radiogram transmission.

This week we will examine an abbreviated format devised by
the ARRL called numbered radiogram texts which are in
common use and save much time in transmission and
reception.

The first noticeable change when using these texts is in the
PREAMBLE. The letters ARL are inserted in the preamble in
the check and in the text before spelled out numbers, which
represent texts from this list. Note that some ARL texts
include insertion of numerals.

An example:

"Number one routine HX Golf W1AW ARL Three
Newington Connecticut one eight three zero zulu July one

Donald Smith
Figures one six four East Sixth Avenue North
River City Missouri zero zero seven eight nine
Telephone seven three three four nine six eight
Break

ARL Forty six

Break
DIANA

Likewise a disaster relief message could be sent like so:

"Number one EMERGENCY HX Golf W1AW ARL Ten
Newington Connecticut one eight three zero zulu July one

Donald Smith
Figures one six four East Sixth Avenue North
River City Missouri zero zero seven eight nine
Telephone seven three three four nine six eight
Break

ARL SIXTEEN X Ray ARL
TWENTY ONE ARL NINE Twenty
X Ray
Break

Diana Hopkins, Home County Emergency Management

If sent in plain test this message would have had a check of
34!
It would read as follows...

Property damage very severe in
this area X Ray Search and
Rescue assistance is needed by
local authorities here X Ray Advise
availability X Ray Additional twenty radio
operators needed to assist with
emergency at this location

Break

Diana Hopkins, Home County Emergency Management

You can see the difference this can make on a crowded net in
a real disaster!
