QST:
The club will again be sponsoring a Field Day event, with an exciting twist.
We will be located at the old FCC facility at 6721 Raspberry Road this year.
The event starts with setting up Friday evening, June 26 and ends tearing
down Sunday June 28.
What is Field Day? ARRL Field Day is the single most popular on-the-air
event held annually in the US and Canada. On the fourth weekend of June of
each year, more than 35,000 radio amateurs gather with their clubs, groups
or simply with friends to operate from remote locations.
Field Day is a picnic, a campout, practice for emergencies, an informal
contest and, most of all, FUN! More information can be found at
www.arrl.org.
We are looking for volunteers to help in many different areas, which is why
it is such a unique opportunity. If you have questions or are interested in
any way, contact me at al7lo at arrl.net, or activities at kl7aa.net, call 258
1445, or come to this Friday's general membership meeting at the APU campus
at 7:00PM.
What will we talk about?
1. An overview of previous successful club Field Days
2. The mechanics of the event
a. The remote powered ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service) set up
b. The technical details of practicing setting up equipment often not
familiar to us, and learning lots of new things about stations in general
that will help you at yours
c. The operating in a near contest like environment of many modes (how
many of us work in CW, voice, and digital? Great spot to get exposure)
d. The running of electrical power, raising of antennas, transmission
lines, computers, cables (lots!)
e. The environment, how we can set up in weather and be efficient and
safe in all aspects of the hobby. There is electricity and it could be
raining, how do we make sure we are operating safely?
3. Public interaction - very important to let the community at large
know we are still here and viable. Many people think we have been subsumed
by technology, when instead we embrace it. Nice to get to show off.
4. Comradery. What is ham radio without the social side? A great
place to talk about lots of subjects with your co-hobbyists
Please join us in any way you can, I am putting together the volunteer list
if you can provide some assistance. Or if not, feel free to drop by and say
hi! The talk in frequency will be the club repeater on Glen Alps 146.94.
Also visit the website for details on how to get there, Ron has posted a
nice informational page.
