Workgroup Communications and Public Information Meeting
– April 18, 2013
Meeting conducted by FEMA Region X to discuss communications and public
information issues
Extracted Bullet points from the meeting. We need to read these and ask
what we each can do to improve our service to our communities.
• Amateur radio will be important.
• Amateur radio operations will report to the SEOC(or EOC-added AL7FS)
when a disaster occurs. They are not as robust as they used to be.
• Some EOCs have HF, some don’t.
• It is more effective for local EOCs to fax in requests versus phone.
Most important comm path between SEOC and local EOC’s (in order):
electronic (email), fax, and then phone/voice.
• Not a lot of HF operators in the government.
• Limited data collection over HF.
