Bastille Day Greetings;
I am seeking about 10 (or so) volunteer communicators to support the
(Anchorage) Alaska 10km Classic, Saturday, August 7, 2004, 0900-1200.
The race begins at 1000 at the Moseley Sports Center on the Alaska
Pacific University Campus and ends downtown near 9th and P. Contestants
must complete the race within 2 hours, so we should be free by noon.
Additional event information is available on the world wide web at:
http://www.10kclassic.com/
The event sponsors have asked for the following assistance:
1. Mobile Assets
a. 1 bicycle mobile rabbit
b. 1 bicycle mobile sweep
Accompany race officials preceeding and following the race
contestants. This is a fast race (10km is about 6.2 statute miles and
the leaders will be finishing in 30 minutes or so) so any rabbit
volunteers should be aware that they'll need to be fast (at least
compared to me).
It might be interesting if we could provide APRS data to the
race officials, so I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who'd care to let
a rabbit and/or sweep use a small, lightweight APRS tracker.
c. 1 automobile mobile general troubleshooter
2. Shadows
a. Start (Moseley Sports Center, APU)
b. Maplewood Street
c. Finish (9th and P Street)
Shadows provide personal communication for race officials.
3. Checkpoints
5 communicators for race checkpoints along the route.
Checkpoint communicators provide communications for race officials
at their checkpoints.
Minimally, volunteers will require a handheld radio and whatever else
may be required to keep you (and it) going for about 2 hours, regardless
of the weather. Since a portion of the race course is on a bike path,
mobile units will require a bike and bicycle mobile radio gear. If this
event follows the usual pattern, the start and finish will be high noise
environments where a headset and mic will be needed. The auto-mobile
station should be an experienced amateur communicator with good
problem-solving abilities. It is desirable (but not required) for all
amateur communicators to have basic first-aid training and equipment.
Details will be forthcoming.
Thanks for your continuing support of the Amateur Radio Service by
participating in these public service events. By contributing your time,
skills and assets you not only make our town a more amusing and safe
place to live, but provide an on-going justification for the very
existence of the Amateur Service.
If you would be interested in participating, please contact me as soon
as possible. My contact information is listed below.
Thanks and 73,
phil
