I was operating in the Missouri QSO Party this past weekend and was
reminded again about how frustrating SSB can be when you are running 100
watts. Yes, I made quite a few SSB QSOs but there were also a few stations
with decent signals who couldn't hear me. It seemed like 100 watts on SSB
used to do better in the past, I am guessing that the noise floor for many
stations has increased thanks to all of the cheap, noisy, hashy switching
power supplies in consumer electronics.
Anyways, an amp wouldn't fit into the station design very well right now,
but I am thinking about replacing the TS2000 with a TS590SG, or a Kenwood
TS480HX to get 200 watts. I am leaning towards the 590, though. I wonder
if anyone has used the Ten Tec 715 speech processor with their TS590,
TS2000, or TS480and did that make SSB have a extra punch to it. Ten Tec
claims that it can add 6db of signal or so on SSB. I am using the speech
processor on my TS2000, but wonder if this device would work better for SSB.
Any experience with it?
