Hello Ken.

I'll offer up a one-word response:  Clif Holland, KA5IPF

I guess that's more than one word, but I highly recommend Clif for all
things Kenwood when it comes to Kenwood HF radios.  For a sick radio, I
would shoot him an email with the symptoms and after an exchange or two
you might want to send the radio to him.  He serviced my TS-440S several
years ago and I could not have been any happier with his service.  He
has an impeccable reputation for assisting us Kenwood folks all across
the Internet.  You can find his contact info on his website:
http://www.avvid.com/

He'll treat you (i.e. your friend) right!
