[Kenwood] TS-450S woes.

A good friend has a nice TS-450S, which has begun to have problems with the audio in 
transmit. The ALC reading pegs out or drops to zero with no setting in between. In other 
words, it cannot be set so that a normal voice is centered in the ALC scale. It is either all or 
nothing, so to speak.

Furthermore, on the air, both with the original hand-mike, and with a correctly wired Turner 
Plus 3 which I have successfully used with my own Kenwood rigs, the audio sounds distorted 
most of the time, like some audio stage is being overdriven.

Is this a common problem with the TS-450S and if so, where would one begin to look?

Also, is there someone who still services these in case my friend, Bob Isenberg KL2JY, 
needs to send it off?
