[Kenwood] Power out adjust for TS870S FM 100 watts to 140 watts

I adjusted the power on my TS-870S last year.  I was sorry I ever started, but there was no going back.  It was putting out less than 90 watts, and I wanted to crank it up to 100 watts, just to make sure I had enough drive for my amp.  Once you adjust "A7" it messes up other settings, so afterward you have to make several other adjustments, such as TX Gain and ALC.  It took me a long time to get everything right.

When I first tried increasing my power and saving the settings, I was only getting about 50 watts out (argggh!) but finally figured out that you have to hit the "UP" button WHILE transmitting, and not after you're done transmitting, as the procedure states that I was using.  Either the guy who wrote it is wrong, or some TS-870S's behave differently.

I wouldn't try getting 140 watts out.  They are not designed for that much power, and you might end up having big problems.  If you do decide to increase your power, make sure you don't make the same mistake I did, or you will be disappointed.  Good luck.

Has anyone made this adjustment and do they recommend where it does not harm the final output transistors?  If someone has done this I need assistance with knowing one step in the procedure.  There are 8 steps in the procedure.  I will skip to the one I do not understand as follows:

 

-- I can get to the Hidden window ok and the "A7" display for 100 watts power adjustment.

-- Next step is to press PTT ( I assume this is in CW mode key down, then rotate RIT/XIT  knob until you see 140 watts in the display

-- Then press the UP key to confirm.  What I do not understand is that you still keep the PTT engaged or at this point do you not transmit a carrier?

--  I understand how to turn the M.CH/VFO.CH knob to "ba" to write the EEPROM and then hit the UP button to write it, but during this part do you still transmit the carrier or should the carrier be turned off?

 

Any comments would be appreciated.
