[Kenwood] Paddle problem on TS-870S

Ahoy!  A friend loaned me his TS-870S. Beautiful radio!

Noted a problem in CW mode.  In its default configuration, the internal 
keyer makes only dashes.  No dots.  I tried two paddles. Then tested the 
paddles in an outboard keyer to verify they work. Speed adjustment 
works.  Reversing the dot-dash via the front panel buttons works, but 
then the internal keyer makes only dots. If I had to guess, I'd say the 
problem is the paddle jack not making contact with one part of the plug.

The owner said he didn't experience this problem.  Has anyone else?  
Please advise.
