[Kenwood] TS-850 Audible Whine

It indeed could be the fan, however the TS-850S has only one fan (for the final amplifier section). There is no power supply fan as the radio uses an outboard 12VDC supply. The 930/940 had two fans and a built in power supply.

This would most likely be the power supply fan.

They were either made by Panasonic or Matshusta.  These are bushing 
motors.  Toss them!

Do yourself a favor.  Open the back up, and wire in a 12VDC Computer 
Ball Bearing CPU fan.

Not only will the whine stop, but you can easily drop the running 
current by half or more.

Did this to my TS-930SAT.  Cools well, and quiet as a mouse. Takes less 
to run, thereby drops the 12VDC power bus load.
