Hello Pete, yes the TS-480HX puts out twice the AM and FM power of the
typical 100 watt hf rig. Typical of the Kenwood radios is great receive and
transmit audio.
Not sure about the Sky Command / Sky King era ..... Sky Command may be old
technology, but it got new era boost when the FCC made changes that allowed
it to be used from Two Meters.
I know of operators that used it for emcomm support by using an HT away from
the vehicle and access hf communications. That is quite an aid.

Have used it in as a HFN MarsAle Pilot Station almost 24/7/365 for about
five years now..... from the base and mobile. It has great duty cycle and
can be ran at lower power output, such as 100 watts, but handle a hot mobile
long rag chew environment very well. On the base the remoatble head gives a
lot of flexibility. Mine is in the basement, but I also use it from the bed
room and living room by using shielded cables between the main unit and the
control head and Mike. Fantastic digital radio, and wonder for the rag chew.
