[Kenwood] Low audio volume on TS-940S

I've bought a TS-940S which seems to have a couple of problems - see my other 
problem with the display blanking, as one or more VCOs loses lock.

After its warm, this rig does actually transmit and receive. However, the audio 
volume on receive is very low. Even with both RF and AF gain controls to 
maximum, I can't hear any background noise on a dummy load. When I connect an 
antenna, I can hear stations, but the audio volume appears to be very low.

The rig is not "deaf". A 50 uV signal from a signal generator indicates S9 and I 
can quite clearly hear a 1 uV signal from a sig gen. It seems as if the audio 
stage(s) have low gain.

I have a struggle to hear the AM broadcast stations, despite the fact the rig 
has the optional wide AM filter.

I've got the low-cut and high-cut controls in the correct position. If I click 
the "GRAPH" button, it shows all segments on the LCD display. I can then adjust 
the passband if I wish, which obviously reduces the audio level even further.

Any ideas what this might be?

I've not yet tried the obvious thing and use an external speaker. I seem to have 
mis-laid any suitable connectors I once had, but I can get one ordered. But the 
speaker looks intact, so I very much doubt that's the problem.

Has anyone experienced this sort of issue before?
